WebAIM's February 2026 automated analysis of one million home pages found detectable Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) failures on 95.9% of the sample, with an average of 56.1 detected errors per page, up from 51 a year earlier.1 Because automated testing identifies only a subset of accessibility problems, this is not evidence that 95.9% of entire websites failed a complete accessibility audit. It is evidence that basic, machine-detectable barriers remain widespread despite mature standards and tooling.

More than 1.3 billion people, about 16% of the global population, live with disability.2 For CIOs, however, the stronger business case is not population size alone. Accessibility increasingly intersects with digital-service obligations, procurement, application quality, regulatory exposure, and the cost of remediating inaccessible systems after deployment.
