AI has been used to deter thousands of citizens from voting by using a deepfake of President Joe Biden’s voice for robocalls made in January 2024. AI can also be used to commit insurance fraud, allow money launderers to bypass KYC conducted by financial institutions; and infect a user’s system through indirect prompt injection.

Future state and federal laws written to combat these threats can lead to a patchwork of AI laws across the US—leading to conflict and confusion for businesses. Tech leaders with an AI portfolio who are operating in the US must start now and prepare to navigate this shifting landscape.
